For food and drinks, the clubhouse is home to the Old Silo Restaurant, and the facility can also host parties of up to 150 people. The course also features a 6,000-square-foot clubhouse that offers beautiful views of the course from its balcony. The Old Silo golf shop offers the latest in clothing and equipment, and lessons are also available. There's also a spacious driving range with Bent grass teeing area and seven target greens. The practice facilities at Old Silo are considered some of the best in the state and include a 10,000-square-foot putting green, and a chipping green with practice sand bunker. The green presents some challenge as well, guarded in the front by a small creek and bunkers left and right. What follows is an approach shot off a downhill lie that tends to play about 15 yards shorter than the actual yardage. The fairway landing area will have golfers thinking layup, as it ends about 250 yards from the tee and is guarded left and right by bunkers. 15 hole is a difficult par-4 that plays to 433 yards from the Black tees and a respectable 392 from the Whites. On approach, golfers must hit to a challenging green that is shallow, multi-tiered and surrounded by bunkers. A drive to the left of the bunkers presents golfers with a short path to the green, but a riskier route because of the hazardous rough that runs the length of the fairway. Named "Wishbone,'' the par-5 hole plays to a fairway split by two bunkers. 13 hole is another especially scenic and challenging hole. A number of sand bunkers also guard the fairway on the left, making an accurate tee shot a must. The tee shot features a dramatic 95-foot drop in elevation to the fairway, and golfers must be wary of the creek that cuts through the fairway not once, but twice. Not only is this a very picturesque hole, but it's also quite challenging. 6, which is named "First Glimpse'' for offering golfers their first view of the "Old Silo.'' This par-4 plays to 417 yards from the Black tees and a much more manageable 351 yards from the Whites. Some of the particularly noteworthy holes include No. There are 98 white-sand bunkers, and the course incorporates many scenic and dramatic views created by the rolling terrain and Somerset Creek, which meanders through the property. The course features Bent grass tees, fairways and greens, and lush, tree-lined fairways. The course plays to 6,977 yards and par-72 from the back tees, with a USGA rating of 74.5 and a slope rating of 139. The 18-hole championship course was designed by PGA Champions Tour player Graham Marsh in 2000 and is situated on 209 acres of rolling, Kentucky bluegrass countryside. As Damien points out above, it’s particularly important for audio devices, especially when used with DVS. This goes beyond just MIDI mapping controllers that weren’t designed for Rekordbox use. You have to pay for the software so they don’t care what you use. See it in action with a Kontrol Z2 and Maschine in the video I don’t think Rekordbox filters by USB device name. This means that you should be able to use Rekordbox with just about any soundcard that your computer recognizes. But the price structure of Rekordbox DJ (paying up front or buying a subscription) allows Pioneer DJ to justify not restricting what devices you can use with the software. One of the biggest obstacles in changing DJ software is the concern that you’ll have to spend money buying new gear. Pioneer is clearly putting a ton of money into the quick development of the software – remember how it launched only 8 months ago? What Traktor + Serato Gear Works With Rekordbox? It has a ton of effects, and has received rapid-fire updates every few months. Rekordbox DJ also solves the issue of incompatibility with the latest operating systems which has plagued many users, particularly on the Serato side. Pioneer’s Rekordbox DJ enables a familiar workflow for Serato and Traktor veterans, without the need for new hardware. DVS DJs who want to use a piece of gear that isn’t “certified” for use with their software.įor example: Kontrol Z2 with Serato DJ, without an extra Serato soundcard.Traktor DJs who have watched the feature sets on Serato and Rekordbox expand while NI focused their attention on Stems (ex: Serato FX packs, Rekordbox release effects).Serato DJs using older legacy audio devices that no longer work with modern OS updates. The last couple years have been frustrating for several types of DJs: There are many reasons to avoid it – but with Pioneer DJ’s newcomer, Rekordbox DJ, it’s not as difficult as you might expect. Almost any Serato DJ or Traktor Pro gear can be used with the software, without paying extra or hacking. Want to upload you own MIDI mappings for Rekordbox, or check out what other people design? In addition to the MIDI mapping, there were a few other things that Pioneer DJ has added to the new version of Rekordbox, mostly to do with the new NXS2 units: This might be frustrating – but we can’t fault Pioneer too much as they’re looking to built a complete ecosystem that works best with their own devices. Pioneer obviously want to keep their own controllers and media players as the primary way that people use this software, so they’ve intentionally left out jogwheel control from this mapping. MIDI OUT (particularly useful for sending LED output signals)īased on our assessment, this puts Pioneer’s Rekordbox MIDI mapping functionality right in the middle between Traktor and Serato – there’s no advanced modifier controls like in Traktor, but there’s way more depth here than Serato DJ or Scratch Live has ever had.Type (Button, Rotary, Knob/Slider, Pad).MIDI IN (the control that Rekordbox is listening for).
With so many doors, turns, and dead ends many would consider it more of a maze. She hired multiple carpenters and they worked through all hours of the day and eventually were able to produce the 7-story mansion. At the time what used to be a small farmhouse was purchased by Sarah in 1884 and the journey started. In an attempt to serve these wishes, Sarah sold her then house and moved from Connecticut to California. Not for herself, but for all the people who have fallen from a gun produced by his company. This medium was able to connect with her husband and pass on a message - he wanted Sarah to leave her current home and build a new one. Accordingly, she called upon a medium for advice. Continuing after his death Sarah was heir to half the company and William’s possessions.Īt this point in time, a grieving Sarah wanted more clarity on what to do after her husband’s death and how she should move forward. Considering wars were going on at this time the company was very successful at the time and William maintained this until his death in 1881. While they were married William was the owner of the gun company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Sarah Winchester, born in 1839, would later marry her husband, William Winchester. With all this space for nobody to live in, you would wonder why was this done. The more bizarre part is that all these rooms were built for the ghost thought to haunt the house, not the owner. This property is currently standing with 160 rooms including, 40 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 2 basements, and more. This mansion was built in 1884 by Sarah Pardee Winchester. Although, it doesn’t have as much fright as other haunted houses the story behind it is just as intriguing. With its wacky design and the history behind it, the Winchester Mystery House is one of the most infamous haunted houses in America. There are also a couple period artillery pieces and a reconstruction of a small cabin which presumably represents the accommodations at the camp. Inside the park is a small obelisk monument and a plaque for members of the 14th Wisconsin Infantry killed at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. There is an impressive stone arch at the park's entrance built in 1912 - on the left is a statue of a young Union solider, on the right is a statue of the same individual some 50 years later as a GAR veteran. The school's huge football stadium, fieldhouse, and sports center (all named for Camp Randall) occupy most of the land, but this park has been set aside to commemorate the site's role in the Civil War. In 1893, the state purchased the land for the University of Wisconsin - mostly for athletic facilities. The camp also served as a hospital and a Confederate POW camp during the war - some 140 interned prisoners died here. View a Biographical Article About Col. He managed to stay in the saddle for a short time, but loss of blood compelled him to leave the field and move to a hospital behind the lines where he died the next morning. On the afternoon of September 19, 1863, Heg was charging forward at the front of his troops when he was shot in the abdomen. On September 19-20, 1863, Heg's brigade was outnumbered and the 15th Infantry again lost more than 100 soldiers. Death at ChickamaugaĪt Chickamauga, Georgia, 10 miles south of Chattanooga, the Confederates made a stand. His brother, William Barker, served in the 10th. My great grandfather, Jonathan Barker was a member of the 8th Wisconsin Battery Light Artillery also known as Lyon's Pinery. His horse was shot out from under him and his general called him "the bravest of the brave." In February 1863 Heg was put in command of the entire brigade and pursued retreating Confederate troops through Tennessee, briefly into Alabama, and across the state line to Chickamauga, Georgia. Hello, I am new to this list and am mainly interested in the units that my ancestors served in. On December 30, 1862, at the battle of Stones River, Heg's regiment lost more than 100 men. They moved through Nashville to Perryville, Kentucky, where on October 8, 1862, Heg led his regiment safely though its first large-scale battle. 10 fell on April 8, most of the regiment advanced into Tennessee. Louis, the 15th Infantry defeated a band of Confederates in Union City, Kentucky. On March 31, soon after arriving at Island No. The 15th Wisconsin Infantry, made up largely of recent immigrants, went into training at Camp Randall in December and left for the South on March 2, 1862. In the fall of 1861 a new Scandinavian regiment was recruited and Heg accepted appointment as its colonel. When hostilities broke out in April 1861, Heg devoted state prison labor toward the war effort. In 1859 Heg was elected state prison commissioner, a position in which he advocated vocational training rather than punishment of prisoners. He was a delegate to the Wisconsin party convention in 1857. He served on the county board (1855-1857) and joined the fledgling Republican Party. Heg married soon after his return and entered local politics. He returned to Wisconsin in 1851 following the death of his parents in order to care for his younger siblings and manage the family farm. As a young man he went to California in the Gold Rush and stayed from 1849-1851. Heg migrated to the United States from Norway as a child in 1840 and spent his youth at Muskego, in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. View the original source document: WHI 47408 Early Career A costly and risky nesting strategy-the family is doomed if anything happens to the male-it provides hornbills nearly 100 percent protection against predators of eggs and hatchlings. For up to four months, the bird remains walled off from the world as she incubates her eggs and raises the chicks. Once sealed in, the female is totally dependent on the male, who passes food to her through the hole. When a female hornbill is ready to lay eggs, she enters a hole in a tree, then seals the entrance-using a combination of feces, regurgitated fruit and mud delivered by her mate-leaving just a narrow opening. While different hornbill species have somewhat different diets, dispersing the seeds of different trees, there is one characteristic shared by all Asian hornbills: an unusual nesting strategy found in no other kind of bird on Earth. For the critical role they play in forest ecosystems, longtime hornbill researchers Margaret Kinnaird and Tim O’Brien, authors of The Ecology and Conservation of Asian Hornbills, have dubbed the birds the “farmers of the forest.” Although other animals also disperse the seeds of rain forest trees, hornbills are among the most effective because they travel widely and do not destroy seeds by chewing them, like many mammals, or by grinding them up in their gizzards, like many birds. Larger seeds are regurgitated and spit out after the birds work the flesh loose in their stomachs. Hornbills swallow smaller seeds, which pass through their systems undigested and are deposited in feces on the forest floor. In the process, the animals provide an invaluable service to many tree species: transporting the seeds contained within their fruit far enough away from the “mother tree” that they can germinate. Large birds, hornbills need large areas of forest to find enough fruit to sustain themselves. Though hornbills are not closely related to the smaller, similar-looking toucans of South America, they use their long bills in much the same way: to extend their reach as they forage in the forest canopy, primarily for fruit. In most species, these structures-called casques-are light and hollow, their translucence visible when backlit by the sun. The birds are named for the decorative and often colorful projections on their upper bills. Hornbills belong to a family of 57 species that are native to tropical Africa and Southeast Asia. Sadly, I’ve also seen firsthand the threats they face, especially from the loss of their forest habitat. At the same time, I’ve found out quite a bit about the lives of these fascinating creatures. To date, I’ve shot over 300 rolls of film-more than 10,000 photographs-of Asian hornbills. Gradually, I succeeded and expanded my pursuit to more than a dozen hornbill species, not only in Indonesia, but also in Thailand and the Philippines. Finally, I learned that to photograph hornbills you need to have a lot of patience. And I learned how to construct-while dangling hundreds of feet above the ground-blinds made of camouflage cloth, netting and leafy branches to fool the wary birds into letting me get close enough for intimate pictures. I learned how to rig these trees with ropes so I could climb up into the canopy. During that time, I learned how to identify and locate the fruiting trees that hornbills are most likely to return to day after day. Figuring out how to photograph the elusive birds in the wild, within their dense forest canopy habitat, took four years of fieldwork spread out over more than a decade. I thought, “I have to find a way to photograph these birds!”įrom that day on, getting pictures of Borneo’s hornbills, and especially the rhinoceros hornbill, became an obsession. Yet it was so far above me that getting a picture from the ground was impossible. A flash of red meant it was probably a rhinoceros hornbill, one of the most impressive birds on the planet. Looking up, I caught a glimpse of a huge, black, big-beaked bird that landed high in a tree. My first day in the rain forest of Borneo, I heard a loud whoosh, whoosh, whoosh of wing beats above the forest canopy. IT WAS OVER 20 years ago, but I remember as if it were yesterday. In a decades-long quest to shoot pictures of some of the world's rarest and most spectacular birds, a photographer learns about patience-and the power of individuals to make a difference There was room for improvement that the University of Tennessee’s Forensic Anthropology Center (FAC) had just recently begun to explore. Forensic anthropologists at the time were unable to determine PMI for a well-decayed corpse. Had Kuklinski tried to hide the victim’s identity by removing personal effects and fingertips, as he had done in previous cases, determining the PMI may have been impossible. Masgay’s frozen corpse left no pathologic clues for time of death. Deppner’s body was too decomposed for any accurate biological estimate. The personal effects found on Deppner and Masgay’s bodies were the only clues to identify them and provide evidence for the post-mortem interval (PMI) – how long they had been dead. Gambino family hitman Roy DeMeo and his crew dismembered their victims for easy disposal with the philosophy of “no body, no crime.” DeMeo hired Richard Kuklinski for occasional hits. Masgay was a customer for fencing hijacked VHS tapes. Deppner was an associate in Kuklinski’s breaking-and-entering crew. Kuklinski’s murders were not limited to Mob hits, however. Kuklinski worked with DeMeo’s crew as an enforcer. DeMeo and his crew perfected a system of murder called the “Gemini method.” They would lure a target into an apartment next to DeMeo’s Gemini Lounge bar where, after a shot to the head, the crew would drain the body of blood and dismember the corpse for easy disposal. Later, he became involved with a like-minded killer, Gambino family hitman Roy DeMeo of New York. He started doing occasional jobs for the DeCavalcante family in New Jersey. Kuklinski had already committed a number of murders by the time he began his career with the Mob. A missing persons report confirmed this was Louis Masgay.ĭeppner and Masgay were both associates - and now victims - of Mob hitman Richard Kuklinski. Investigators were fortunate that the culprit was in a hurry and did not properly thaw the body, or else they would have never realized the victim died more than two years before. The body appeared fresh because it had been frozen. During the autopsy, the coroner found evidence of ice crystals in the victim’s heart. Corpses typically begin to decompose from the bacteria inside the body, but in this case the body had more decay on the outside than inside. The corpse appeared to be fresh with little decomposition. Getty ImagesĪ few months later, police found another body in Orangetown, just north of the New Jersey-New York border, under curious circumstances. Mob hitman Richard Kuklinski was arrested on December 17, 1986, and ultimately sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder of associates Daniel Deppner and Gary Smith.
